Weekly update from DDS office – February 9, 2024

Dear DDS Families,

Creating a sense of belonging and strengthening the feeling of community is important at DDS. We continue to offer opportunities for students to build friendships and new connections outside of their immediate classroom. Our Friendship Bracelet Club will come to a close this week as our Craft Club begins.

Our next opportunity open for registration, for students in grades 1 to 5, is Coding Club. Students will meet over the lunch hour to learn basic coding skills, solving problems and building games. Play will focus on experimenting with drag and drop coding including loops and functions. This club will be limited to 20 students per lunch hour to accommodate available devices and support. Sign up here

When: Lunchtime (11:50 to 12:30 for grades 1 & 2 - 12:40 to 1:20 for grades 3, 4, & 5)

Dates: Feb. 22, Feb. 29, Mar. 7, Mar. 14, Mar. 21 Where: DDS Piazza

School Council Needs You!

The next School Council meeting will be February 21st at 6:30 pm. We will be offering free babysitting for this meeting – registration is required. Meeting information, including an online link for those who prefer to attend virtually, will be sent closer to the date. At this meeting school administration will review budget information and engage parents in important decisions regarding next year.

We are actively looking for new members to join our School Council for next year. Some of the positions on school council require little time yet make a big difference. There are also roles which a police clearance is not needed as they do not require you to be at the school. Being part of School Council also allows you to add your voice towards making important school decisions which impact every student in our school.

To continue running our DDS School Council, we need the following positions to be filled for the 2024-25 School Year.  More in-depth descriptions of these essential volunteer positions can be found on our school website here

·         Chair

·         Co-Chair

·         Secretary

Valentine’s Day – February 14th:

Celebrating the themes of friendship and belonging, the sharing of Valentine’s cards at school is a fun and important tradition to many families. On February 14th, teachers will set aside some time in the afternoon for students who wish to hand out Valentine’s cards to their classmates. There will be no classroom parties or sharing of food during this time, but students are welcome to pack a special snack to enjoy.

Kindergarten Registrations – Please check you School Engage Account:

Thank you to our kindergarten families who have already registered for the 2024-25 school year. Early registration allows us to thoughtfully plan forward for staffing. Families can expect a welcome email in March, including details about an online information session and invitation to our Kindergarten Open House.
