DDS Weekly Message - December 8, 2023

Happy Friday Douglasdale Families,

Last year we introduced Multi-age Group Activities with the purpose of building students’ sense of belonging across the school. These groups are an opportunity to learn the names of students and staff outside their classroom and forge connections, building a sense of community. This week our Multi-age Groups gathered for an activity around the book ‘Beautiful Oops’ exploring the idea of a growth mindset. Ask your child about their group and what their ‘Beautiful Oops’ turned into.

We would also like to welcome Ms. Potter to our grade three team. Ms. Potter will be taking over Mrs. Shaw’s class as she takes time off to welcome a new addition to her family.

This year Douglasdale Staff have decided to support the Braveheart Giving Drive to show support for one of our teachers and the journey her family is on. Ryder Haggard, Mrs. Haggard’s 13-year-old son, was born with a rare congenital heart disease, Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.  He has had 3 open heart surgeries to pallatively correct his heart and lives with a single functioning ventricle and atrium.   The Haggard family has organized the Braveheart Giving Drive to help other cardiac families who find themselves on a heart journey.  Douglasdale School will be collecting monetary donations for the Braveheart Giving Fund to support families going through a similar journey at the Alberta Children’s Hospital.  Ryder’s cardiologist says it best, “This incredible gift will bring joy to many families, many of whom cannot afford much, and will ensure that for some kids, Christmas will find them in hospital”.   If your family would like to contribute to the Braveheart Giving Drive, the school office will be collecting cash donations until December 21st. Students who bring in a donation will hang a heart on our Giving Tree to represent their generosity of heart towards other children and their families. Thank you for considering joining us in giving!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Volunteers NEEDED:

Field trips are an important part of learning. We must have a certain number of volunteers in order for classes to go on a field trip. Many teachers have shared that they are struggling with getting enough volunteers. If you have not yet signed up to be a school volunteer, and would be willing to help, here is the process for volunteer clearance:

1.You can find the annual volunteer form to fill out from our School website.

 2. Bring the completed annual volunteer form and two forms of government ID (including one with a photo) to the school.

3. You will receive an email from the office to apply for your ePIC. The cost of this process is $21.25.

4. Calgary Police will send you an email confirming your results are now ready.  Sign into your CPS account and access your letter.

5. Submit a copy of this letter to the office in person or email Sue Naylor at senaylor@cbe.ab.ca . The school will process your ePIC letter and clear you for volunteering.

6. You are now ready to volunteer!

2024-2025 Kindergarten Registration:

2024-2025 Kindergarten registration will open on January 15, 2024.  Kindergarten students must be 5 years by December 31, 2024.  At least one legal guardian must reside in one of our catchment areas – Douglasdale, Douglas Glen or Quarry Park.  All registration must be completed online via your MyCBE account for parents with children in the CBE and via School Engage for new families to the CBE.  Douglasdale School will continue to offer a half-day program, 5 days a week.

Fieldtrip Absences:

The school pays the costs of field trips in advance for all students to attend.  If your child is absent on the day of the event, the fee will not be removed from your account.  If you are going on vacation and have not signed the consent form, the fee will be removed from your account.

School Office Hours:

If you need to contact the office, the hours are as follows:

Monday to Thursday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
