Happy Sunday DDS Families,

This year at DDS, we are implementing a new evidence-based approach to teaching writing. When we looked at our report card and survey data, writing and goal setting continued to be areas we could continue to improve in. The approach we are using to improve these areas is called Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD).

The primary goal of SRSD is to help students develop the ability to independently plan, draft, revise, and edit their writing. The approach emphasizes that writing is a skill that can be learned and improved with practice rather than a talent some are born with. Through SRSD, students learn strategies that help them overcome obstacles and improve their writing skills. It also instills a positive attitude towards writing and boosts their self-confidence.

At our next School Council meeting, 6:00 pm on October 16th, we plan to share more specific information about this writing approach as well as examples from classrooms. We invite families to join us in person or online to learn more about SRSD and how this is being implemented at DDS!

General information about SRSD can be found here:  SRSD: The Science of Writing

Have a great week ahead!

DDS is hosting a book fair during the week of our October Parent/Teacher conferences. This is a fundraiser for the school, where all funds earned go directly into purchasing books for our school library and classrooms. We will be supporting a local company called Owl’s Nest Books. Families are welcome to shop online for both children’s and adult books starting now and until Nov. 1, 2024. There will also be an opportunity for students to shop and purchase in person during the week of October 21 - 25, including during Parent/Teacher conferences.
