DDS Weekly Message - October 6, 2024

Happy Sunday DDS Families,

For our families who walk to and from school, we wanted to share steps that are happening within our community to improve safety. Our School Council has been actively working to improve crosswalk safety. Action items have included submitting requests through 311, requesting traffic safety support from CPS, setting up a volunteer crosswalk schedule, starting a community petition on change.org, and raising awareness through Global News and QR radio. Thank you to our community members who are actively working towards making the walk to and from school safer!

Families can also support this by reviewing crosswalk safety at home with your child. The City of Calgary has many resources to support this. For example, they offer a conversation guide in multiple languages and a video to watch with your children. When we all work together as pedestrians and motorists, we can improve safety! For more information about this collective effort, we invite you to attend our next School Council meeting on October16th at 6:00 pm.

Have a great week ahead!

 Book Fair with Owl’s Nest | October 21 – 25, 2024:

DDS is hosting a book fair during the week of our October Parent/Teacher conferences. This is a fundraiser for the school, where all funds earned go directly into purchasing books for our school library and classrooms. We will be supporting a local company called Owl’s Nest Books. Families are welcome to shop online for both children’s and adult books starting now and until Nov. 1, 2024. There will also be an opportunity for students to shop and purchase in person during the week of October 21 - 25, including during Parent/Teacher conferences.

To shop online, you can purchase books through their website https://owlsnestbooks.com/ using our school code DOUGLAS at checkout.

Volunteers Needed - If you are willing to volunteer to support our book fair fundraiser, please sign up here

Lost and Found | Labelling Belongings:

As our fall weather is constantly changing through various temperatures throughout the day, there has been an increase of items left outside, in our gymnasium and other areas of the school. Often students are unaware they have even lost these items.  Families can help prevent the overflow of Lost and Found by labelling as many items as possible.  Please consider labelling these more popular items: coats, snow pants, hoodies and sweatshirts, shoes, boots, backpack, water bottles and lunch kit.  Thank you!
